Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia, an AI-Powered Rival to Wikipedia

Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new AI-powered encyclopedia that aims to rival Wikipedia with a focus on accuracy and transparency. The platform went live on Monday after a short delay, marking Musk’s latest move in his push for what he calls “truth-based” information.
Announcing the launch on X, Musk described Grokipedia as “fully open source, so anyone can use it for anything at no cost.” He said the goal is “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” adding that while the platform may not be perfect, it will continue striving toward that aim.
The launch followed Musk’s repeated criticism of Wikipedia, which he claims leans toward left-wing views. Grokipedia’s own article on “Wikipedia” reflects this, noting that studies show “deviations from neutrality,” with right-leaning figures often portrayed more negatively than their left-leaning counterparts.
Grokipedia briefly went offline after launch but quickly returned. It currently hosts more than 885,000 articles. Unlike Wikipedia, which depends on human editors, Grokipedia uses Grok AI, the same system integrated into X, to generate and moderate content.
Users can request edits or new entries, but the AI makes the final decision. “Grok generated about 1M articles using a lot of compute,” Musk explained, adding that users can “ask Grok to add/modify/delete articles and it will either take the action or tell you why it won’t.”
Early users have already spotted differences between the two platforms. For example, Grokipedia’s article on George Floyd highlights his criminal record, while Wikipedia’s emphasises that he was killed by a white police officer.
Meanwhile, Wikipedia’s entry on Grokipedia cites critics who believe Musk’s project could reflect “far-right” or pro-Musk perspectives. Despite this, Grokipedia continues to attract attention as an AI-driven alternative seeking to redefine how truth is presented online.
