Indian Minister Jayant Chaudhary Declares Crypto Holdings

Indian Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary and his wife, Charu Singh, reported owning $24,173 and $25,424 in crypto as of March 31, 2025, marking the second year they included it in their official disclosures.
According to a report from Indian express, the funds came from personal savings, though they did not name the specific crypto.
Chaudhary, who oversees Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, said these are “old investments which have just been carried over.” He added, “At the time of investment it was… 2-3 percent of my portfolio as highly speculative… Also fits my wide range in portfolio with large investment in art as well.”
The latest disclosures are published on the Prime Minister’s Office website and form part of the annual asset and liability report for Union ministers. In June 2024, Chaudhary had declared $20,300 in crypto, while Singh had $21,547.
This shows their holdings have grown around 19% and 18% respectively in the last year. Alongside crypto, Chaudhary listed immovable assets worth $4.1 million and movable assets of $1.8 million. His wife reported $264,000 in immovable property and $1.17 million in movable assets.
Notably, Crypto is not officially regulated in India, and the Reserve Bank of India has shared warnings about possible financial or security risks. Meanwhile, people still pay taxes on crypto earnings, and companies need to report any crypto they hold.
Since March 2023, crypto transactions are included under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and banks check customers carefully to prevent fraud. Finance Minister Pankaj Chaudhary told Parliament, “Crypto assets are unregulated in India and the government does not collect data on these assets.”
That said, Jayant Chaudhary is the first Union minister to include cryptocurrency in official asset disclosures. His report highlights growing interest among public figures in digital assets despite unclear rules.
That said, both Chaudhary and Singh have managed to grow their crypto investments while keeping them a small part of a diverse portfolio that includes art, land, and other traditional assets.
