Tether to Launch Native USDT on Bitcoin via RGB Protocol

Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, has announced plans to launch USDT directly on the Bitcoin network through the RGB protocol.

According to the blog post, this move will allow users worldwide to transact USDT on Bitcoin, boosting liquidity and giving the network more everyday use.

The launch means people can now hold and transfer USDT alongside Bitcoin in the same wallet. Until now, investors had to use exchanges and other blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, Tron, or TON to buy Bitcoin with USDT. By bringing the stablecoin directly to Bitcoin, Tether says the process will become faster, easier, and more secure.

RGB, which recently went live on mainnet, allows digital assets to be issued directly on Bitcoin. With this upgrade, USDT can now exist natively on the network, making transactions smoother and giving Bitcoin more practical use beyond being held as an investment.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the launch represents a turning point. “Bitcoin deserves a stablecoin that feels truly native, lightweight, private, and scalable,” he explained.“ With RGB, USDT gains a powerful new pathway on Bitcoin, reinforcing our beliefs in Bitcoin as the foundation of a freer financial future,” He added.

The company also stated that users will also benefit from private transactions and even the ability to send or receive value offline.

Furthermore, they noted that combining Bitcoin’s security with Tether’s stability marks a new frontier for money on the network. It also strengthens Tether’s role as the largest stablecoin issuer, with USDT’s market capitalization now standing at $167 billion. The token ranks as the fourth-largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP.

Notably. Tether holds 78.601 BTC on its balance sheet, according to Arkham data, which is valued at 8.87B at the current price,

At the same time, the company owns a majority stake in Twenty One Capital, which could soon become one of the biggest public Bitcoin treasury companies.
