UNDP to Launch Blockchain Academy for Governments in 2026

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is preparing to start a “Government Blockchain Academy” next year to teach governments about crypto and new technologies.
According to the press release, the academy is being set up with the help of the Exponential Science Foundation, a group that supports blockchain and artificial intelligence. UNDP said the academy will help governments use technology to solve problems, and make services fairer and stronger.
“The Academy will provide specialized education and implementation programs that harness blockchain, AI, and other emerging technologies to help governments drive transformative change,” the UNDP said. The training will focus on using technology for financial services, digital ID systems, and secure recordkeeping to reduce corruption in public work.
The academy will also teach governments how blockchain can be used for climate finance. Officials will learn how to use tokens and smart contracts to track things like carbon credits, helping make sure climate projects are fair and accountable. The training will give governments real skills to use technology to help people directly.
Irena Cerovic, UNDP team leader for Europe and Central Asia, said the academy “will aim to allow countries to tackle complex development challenges in new ways and move from experimentation to implementation in ways that strengthen transparency, inclusion, and resilience.” This shows UNDP wants countries to move from just testing technology to using it in real life.
The academy will offer lessons in person, online, and at special forums. Governments will get clear guidance to create big projects using blockchain that match their country’s needs. The course design will start this year, and some countries will begin the program in 2026. Countries like India, Pakistan, and Vietnam, which used a lot of crypto this year, could be among the first to join.
Last year, UNDP started a similar blockchain academy with the Algorand Foundation. That program trained 22,000 UNDP staff to help countries use blockchain for sustainable growth. The new Government Blockchain Academy focuses on governments instead of UN staff, helping them build their own projects.
The UNDP said the academy will help governments give better public services, create trusted digital IDs, improve financial access, and keep clear records. By using blockchain and AI, countries can develop new ways to grow their economy and reduce poverty.
